Roosevelt regarding the formidable capabilities of nuclear weapons, over 1,300 computer scientists urged the industry to decelerate its advancements and advocated for governmental intervention. Recently, Jacob Coxon made headlines by resigning in a highly visible manner. He took to social media to express his belief that the two foremost AI laboratories were exhibiting profound concern while simultaneously accelerating toward the development of “superhuman systems that can hack anything, revolutionize any field overnight, and acquire real power and resources.” On Saturday, Dario Amodei, the chief executive of Anthropic, published a 3,800-word essay advocating for a global deceleration of AI development, amplifying concerns he had previously articulated. Elon Musk, the billionaire competitor in the AI arena who maintains a close relationship with President Trump, promptly reacted on X: “Dario is right.” Sam Altman, the chief executive of OpenAI, also expressed his support.

He has extended an invitation to fellow lawmakers for a private briefing in the near future to engage with AI safety experts and address these pressing concerns. Sanders has advocated for a prohibition on superintelligent AI, while other legislators have condemned the initiative as a hindrance to American innovation. The congressional missives became increasingly urgent after the release of a report last Thursday by Anthropic, which detailed the various ways in which actors worldwide, including those in China, Russia, Iran, and Yemen, have been utilising its Claude models to orchestrate cyberattacks, surveil dissidents, and construct missiles, bombs, and drones. Nick Anderson, the acting director of the Cybersecurity and Infrastructure Security Agency, stated that digital threats have intensified in the AI era and necessitate prompt action. “We know the worst that can happen,” he said.
