The major U.S. index futures are currently indicating a modestly higher opening on Wednesday, suggesting that stocks are poised for continued strength following notable gains in the previous two sessions. Technology stocks may persist in driving the markets upward, fuelled by a resurgence of optimism regarding the prospects for the artificial intelligence sector. In a further demonstration of the optimistic outlook surrounding AI, shares of SK Hynix listed in the U.S. are experiencing a notable increase of 7.2 percent in pre-market trading. The increase by SK Hynix follows the South Korean chipmaker’s announcement of a record quarterly profit, alongside a declaration of over $25 billion in dividends and buybacks. However, traders may exhibit hesitation in executing more substantial transactions prior to the announcement of the Federal Reserve’s latest monetary policy decision this afternoon. While the Fed is widely anticipated to maintain the current interest rates, market participants are expected to closely scrutinise the accompanying statement and Fed Chairman Kevin Warsh’s press conference following the meeting.
Some traders may also remain on the sidelines in anticipation of the earnings announcements from Microsoft and Google parent Alphabet following the conclusion of today’s trading session. “Investors will be looking beyond headline earnings towards cloud growth, AI-related capital expenditure and forward guidance, particularly whether substantial infrastructure investments are generating sustainable returns,” said Daniela Hathorn. She added, “Strong results could help restore confidence in the Nasdaq, but higher spending without corresponding improvements in profitability could renew valuation concerns.” After commencing the week with a positive sentiment, equities exhibited another significant upward movement during trading on Tuesday. The tech-heavy Nasdaq demonstrated a notable upward movement, recovering from the two-month closing low established the previous Friday.
The Nasdaq retraced some of its gains as the day concluded, yet it still surged by 308.43 points, reflecting an increase of 1.2 percent, closing at 26,477.60. The S&P 500 advanced by 45.83 points, reflecting a 0.6 percent increase, reaching 7,722.60. In contrast, the Dow experienced a more subdued rise, increasing by 15.99 points, which is less than a tenth of a percent, to settle at 52,377.57. Tech stocks have shown signs of recovery following the significant pullback observed late last week, driven by a resurgence of optimism surrounding the artificial intelligence sector. This renewed interest was sparked by AI giant Anthropic’s public filing for an initial public offering on Monday. Potentially contributing to the optimistic sentiment surrounding AI, Nvidia and Meta have announced a partnership to enhance their efforts on Muse and the Muse family of models. Under the partnership, Nvidia announced an investment of $3 billion in Meta, aligning with the Facebook parent’s strategy to secure up to $95 billion through equity financing.
Shares of Broadcom surged by 3.8 percent following the announcement of a $63 billion transaction by Bank of America, Blackstone, Citi, and Morgan Stanley. This deal aims to facilitate the deployment of AI compute capacity, utilising the chipmaker’s technology for Anthropic. Concerns regarding debt-driven expenditures on AI infrastructure significantly impacted the markets late last week; however, traders have demonstrated a recent tendency to swiftly dismiss these apprehensions. A positive reaction to some of the latest earnings news also generated buying interest, with shares of JetBlue soaring by 19.8 percent. The increase in JetBlue’s stock price followed the company’s announcement of a third quarter loss that exceeded expectations; however, it indicated an anticipation of further margin expansion in the fourth quarter. Package delivery giant UPS also spiked by 6.5 percent after reporting third quarter results that exceeded analyst estimates and raising its full-year guidance.
Conversely, a significant decline in Boeing shares constrained the Dow’s potential gains, as the aerospace company fell by 10.7 percent following the announcement of a third quarter loss that exceeded expectations. Computer hardware stocks delivered notable performances within the tech sector, culminating in a 4.1 percent increase in the NYSE Arca Computer Hardware Index. Semiconductor and networking stocks exhibited notable strength, playing a pivotal role in the surge of the tech-heavy Nasdaq. Outside of the technology sector, airline stocks experienced a significant increase as crude oil prices continued their extended decline, leading to a 4.7 percent rise in the NYSE Arca Airline Index. Gold stocks experienced significant strength as the price of the precious metal rose, whereas oil-producer stocks plummeted.
